Geo-Environmental Engineering
9th Canada-France-Japan-Korea Joint Conference on
Geo-Environmental Engineering
(GEE 2009)
The University of British Columbia
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
June 10-12, 2009
ANNOUNCEMENT
May 5, 2009
During the past few weeks, the swine flu epidemic has gained international
media attention. While this originated in Mexico, cases have been reported
also in other countries, including Canada. This in turn has led to travel
restrictions and fears about visiting Canada. In terms of the GEE2009
conference, the large Japanese delegation has said that it is very
unlikely to attend, and others are on the point of cancelling.
As organizer of the conference, this puts me in a very difficult position.
For example, if the conference were to proceed, I would need within the
next few days to make major deposits to hold rooms, and I would also need
to modify the program to reflect cancellations and probable no-shows.
Faced with this situation, I have decided that it is prudent to cancel the
conference. We are very sorry and express regret to all delegates who have
registered. My Canadian colleagues and I had been looking forward to
welcoming you to Vancouver.
In order that the work that has gone into preparing abstracts is not lost,
I will be posting all the abstracts on the conference website
http://gee2009.civil.ubc.ca.
Hopefully the swine flu epidemic will not prove to be as serious as
feared, and we will be able to resume having future GEE conferences.
